New User Looking for Advice on Choosing Curvy Splines
#1
Hi everyone, I’m working on a prototype for a game and I’m wondering if Curvy Splines would be a suitable solution for the movement system before I commit to purchasing it.

The basic idea is that the player controls a character that can only move along predefined tracks, similar to a train following railway tracks. The tracks can have multiple branches and junctions, but which routes are available can change depending on the player’s actions, collected items, or equipped abilities.

The main gameplay would involve reaching the end of each level while solving environmental puzzles and using different abilities to interact with the track.

Some examples include:
  • Switches that rotate or change track junctions
  • Speed boosts that temporarily increase movement speed
  • Items that allow the player to interact with different sections of the track
  • A hook equipped on either side that lets the character swing onto another track
  • Boots that allow the character to jump or bounce over obstacles

Most of the gameplay logic would obviously be handled through Unity, but I’m wondering if Curvy Splines could provide a good foundation for the actual track-based movement, including branching paths and switching between different splines.

Has anyone worked on something similar with Curvy Splines? Would it be a good fit for this type of movement system, or would another approach be more suitable?

Hi Ravigupta,

The examples you listed can be achieved using Curvy Splines.

I think the following is already understood, but just in case: you will have to use the Curvy Splines API to implement all the features you listed. Curvy Splines come with out of the box features that can be set up via the Unity Editor UI, but for extended/customised usages, you will have to code behaviors using the Curvy Splines API. For example, the logic of movement of an object when reaching a junction can be one of the predefined simple logic options included out of the box. But for anything specific to your game, you will have to define a custom junction handler via the Curvy Splines API.

For more information, you can refer to the user manual, specifically the section regarding controllers, and you can also see the API reference, specifically the controllers namespace.

Feel free to ask additional questions if my answer was not clear enough. I hope I was helpful and have a nice day.

PS: You have posted this in the wrong forum section, this one is for Visual Scripting Enhancer, another asset of mine. I will move the post to the Curvy Splines section later.
Please consider leaving a review for Curvy Splines, this helps immensely. Thank you.
