Connection noob, all round noob in fairness

Hi, was hoping someone could help me out? So I am trying to connect 2 splines together, one horizontal one vertical. I have a flying creature attached with a spline controller, and when I reach the end of the horizontal spline I need it to immediately drop vertically. I am pressing connect on the end and start cp's, but the drop down doesn't see either. I am new to this and would greatly appreciate some help out of this hole   Alan.
